1. Gravity - October 6, 2013. DAVID'S TAKE: Arguably, one of the best movies I've ever seen! Remarkable camera work and edge-of-your-seat story line. Highly recommended. MELLISA'S TAKE: I agree with David, Gravity is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Sandra Bullock's performance was exciting, heart-wrenching, full of strength that she makes us believe the character didn't know she had in her. I have always been a fan of Ms. Bullock's and this movie does not disappoint. The effects are amazing! The decision to film with some scenes having no sound at all works perfectly as everyone knows there is no sound in space. It added to the aloneness the character feels. I felt like I was in space with her. Go see this movie, you will not be disappointed.
2. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 - October 8, 2013. DAVID'S TAKE: Sub-standard kid's fare. The best jokes were all used up the trailers and commercials for this yarn-fest. Fun escapism yes, but suggest you wait for the DVD or pay-per-view. MELLISA'S TAKE: As much as I love cartoons, I was let down with this film. The problem with sequels is the time it took for the story to be told in the first film and for the characters to be known. That is what makes the first films work. The second films often let us down. We already know the characters so unless there is something new to learn about them, the film suffers. The Shrek series was an exception. It worked because it introduced new characters for us to care about and told great stories. Cloudy 2 fell short in this way.
3. Captain Phillips - October 16. 2013. DAVID'S TAKE: It looks like Tom Hanks is well on his way to Oscar nomination #3 for his fine portrayal of reluctant "hero"/everyman in this very realistic movie. MELLISA'S TAKE: WOW!!! This movie was spectacular! Trying not to give anything away, the previews did a great job of telling one version of the story that makes you think you know what will happen but what actually happens is far better. Tom Hanks has turned in another Oscar worthy performance. Beautifully filmed, awesome storytelling. I loved the ending, Mr. Hanks left me feeling like I wanted to give him a hug and tell him everything will be okay.
4. Escape Plan - October 18, 2013. DAVID'S TAKE: Considering their long careers and similar movie styles, it is remarkable that it is only with the Expendables franchise that Stallone and Arnie have not been in more movies together. Despite a few screenplay holes and some disappointing casting (Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is downright terrible, and Sam Neill seems wasted as the weak prison doctor), the movie is still a welcome escape and is very entertaining overall. MELLISA'S TAKE: 80's ACTION HEREOS!!! are the bomb! I am SO thrilled that these two muscle bound funny men finally did a movie together like this one. I only wish they had done it sooner. The story was fun, the action superb, the one-liners laugh out loud hysterical. The whole audience was laughing. Sam Neill was wasted, I expected him to do more but it did not detract that much. The writers did a wonderful job of putting 3 men from different backgrounds who are closer to enemies at the beginning and bringing them full circle to friends by the end. I hope Arnie and Sly do more movies together. How about the buddy cop movie?!
